Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage change?

Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) / 80 × 100 = 25%.

Why doesn't +20% then −20% get me back to the start?

Because the second 20% is taken from a bigger number. 100 + 20% = 120, and 120 − 20% = 96.
